Robotic Nanotech Swarms on Mars in 2034!!?

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

[/.] Roland Piquepaille writes “NASA is testing a shape-shifting robot called ‘TETwalker’ for tetrahedral walker, because it looks like a flexible pyramid. It has been tested in the lab and at the McMurdo station in Antarctica to test it under conditions more like those on Mars. Now, it is on the way to be — really — miniaturized by using micro- and nano-electro-mechanical systems. These robots will eventually join together to form ‘autonomous nanotechnology swarms‘ (ANTS). When it’s done, in about thirty years, these nanotech swarms will ‘alter their shape to flow over rocky terrain or to create useful structures like communications antennae and solar sails.’ So in 2034, nanotechnology will land on Mars. Read more for other details and references about the TETwalker and the ANTS project.”

Echo2, with Ajax-based Rendering

Wednesday, March 30th, 2005

This Echo2 thing reminds me of my own Client / Server framework, which is also based on XML and JavaScript (Ajax!!?).

Echo2 is a reinvention of the Echo Web Framework
built around an Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) rendering engine. Distributed under the Mozilla Public License, Echo2 aims at providing a component-oriented/event-driven toolkit for developing web applications that approach the capabilities of rich clients.

UPDATE: I found an article explaining the concepts behind “Ajax”;

Dark Energy Not Needed?

Friday, March 25th, 2005

Italian, US cosmologists present alternate explanation for accelerating expansion of the universe: Was Einstein right when he said he was wrong?

[/.] “A Fermilab press release reports that the expansion of the universe may be explainable without the need for dark energy or a cosmological constant. Apparently, ripples from inflation in the early universe may account for the observed expansion rate of the universe.”
