BBC NEWS: “South Korean scientists say they have made stem cells tailored to match the individual for the first time.
“Cloning for research purposes is profoundly unethical”

Each of the 11 new stem cell lines that they made were created by taking genetic material from the patient and putting it into a donated egg.
The resultant cells were a perfect match for the individual and could mean treatments for diseases like diabetes without problems of rejection.
But the researchers told Science that there were still hurdles to overcome. ”

Considering the enormous potential of these “tailored” stem cells to treat human diseases which need extensive repair, it seems a conscientious effort to me and a great contribution toward Science.

Although facing too much controversy for now, the thought of generating “the customized stem cell lines” is still great! I think Dr. Hwang’s research should be absolutely given another chance.

Although this landmark study has been proven to be the biggest scientific fraud in years, an independent attempt to a possible creation of “pateint-specific stem cell lines” would be the most graceful way towards the closure of this issue.
As quoted in Science 310: 1903, by Sir Ian Wilmut, who cloned “Dolly” the sheep, “This can be best resolved within the scientific community” .
